Monroe County’s Office of Public Integrity has completed its investigation of sensitive personal information found in the trash at county auto license bureaus.
County Clerk Adam Bello, whose office runs the bureaus, says four of the five recommendations in the final report are steps he’s already put in place. Personal data including social security numbers was found on paperwork thrown into the trash and into dumpsters behind two of the ALB’s. Bello blamed the security lapse on employees who had been recycling the confidential documents instead of shredding them.
Bello put new document handling rules in place, made sure staff was trained on them, and put up signs telling customers not to put their confidential information in the trash. The OPI report says that process should be continued and routinely reviewed. It also says new staff and supervisors need to have document security reinforced.
