The Monroe County Legislature Tuesday night held off on legislation to curb illegal use of dirt bikes and ATVs on public streets, and decided to hold a public hearing on the legislation before taking a vote.

It’s illegal to ride dirt bikes and All Terrain Vehicles on public roads, but groups of riders have come out in good weather this spring, swarming through traffic, running red lights and stunting on the highways. There have been two fatal accidents as a result.

The county legislation would allow police agencies county-wide to seize and impound dirt bikes when riders are caught on public roads. It was first submitted by Democrats Joe Morelle Jr. and Yversha Roman. Shortly before the meeting, the Republican Majority introduced its own version of the bill, drawing criticism from the Democrats.

The public hearing will be Tuesday, May 11 at 6:00 p.m.
