Congresswoman Louise Slaughter says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will complete a massive dredging project at the Port of Rochester and Irondequoit Bay this week, getting both federal waterways dug out to their authorized depth for the first time in years.
With this year’s high water it’s not as much of an issue, but in past years it’s been hard for large vessels to get in and out of the port at Charlotte. Most affected has been the lake freighter Steven B. Roman, which carries cement to the ESSROC Corporation on the Genesee River. She’s the last major carrier that’s been serving a Rochester customer.
Slaughter fought for federal funding to let the corps keep the Port of Rochester dredged out so vessels can get full access.
