Durand Eastman Park opened as usual today after fleeing suspects apparently fired shots at Irondequoit Police officers there yesterday evening.

Five police agencies responded, shutting down the park where people were trying to beat the heat at Durand Eastman Beach. Police haven’t said much about the incident…but they say the six suspects are no longer in the park and they’ve recovered both stolen vehicles involved in the incident. They say the public is no longer in danger.

Camp Eastman and its summer programs opened today with Irondequoit’s police chief on hand to satisfy parents about their children’s safety.

The incident began in Greece with a reported burglary and the theft of an H2 Hummer. An Irondequoit officer spotted the Hummer in a parking lot at Durand Eastman Beach. Police kept watch on the yellow Hummer until a group of four men and two women came back from the beach. Police then gave chase.

The suspects abandoned the Hummer on the Durand Golf Course. Shots were reportedly fired there and the suspects stole a Mercedes Benz to make their getaway. More than 100 officers from Greece, Irondequoit, Rochester, Monroe County and the State Police searched for the suspects and recovered both stolen cars.
