A Rochester police officer fired a shot at a vehicle that rammed a patrol car while trying to flee from a traffic stop early Sunday. The shot hit the fleeing car, but not the driver, who was arrested after crashing into a metal barrier.

Police say this happened about 4:40 a.m. on Dewey Avenue, when they tried to stop 19-year-old Luvarius Santiago in a stolen car.

Santiago put the car into reverse and rammed the police cruiser, at which an officer fired one round from his department-issued handgun. The suspect complained of minor leg pain after crashing the car but refused medical attention.

Police found Santiago had two previous warrants, one for menacing and one for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He’s also facing charges of grand larceny, attempted assault, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.

The case may go before a Monroe County Grand Jury.
