A man accused of kidnapping a 4-year-old child and his mother in Rochester has been arrested by U.S. Marshals and is in the Monroe County Jail.

Daniel Ponder, 24, was captured after a foot chase Saturday night that began on Wellington Avenue. He’s charged with second degree kidnapping, first degree burglary, second degree assault, plus several counts of criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say Ponder triggered an Amber Alert early Saturday morning when he forcibly took the four year old and his mother from a house on Fulton Avenue. Police responding to a call of gunfire found a man had been chased down the street by another man who was shooting at him. The victim led police back to his home where they found the mother and child missing.

About 14 hours later, tips from the public led police to a house on Reynolds Street, about three miles away. The mother and son were found safe. Police are still investigating.
