Pittsford residents have voted by a large margin to renovate and expand the Spiegel Community Center. The $9.3 million project passed by a count of 1,650 “yes” votes to 739 “no,” or about 69 percent to 31 percent.
Pittsford officials said the 100 year old building on Lincoln Avenue needed $6 million dollars worth of repairs just to keep the doors open, so it makes sense to spend the money for a complete overhaul and upgrade. That’s still less than a brand new building.
The Spiegel Center was originally built as a school in 1916 and looks it. The renovated version will get an added lobby with an elevator and indoor ramps, a new gym, new heating and, for the first time, air conditioning.
