An online petition is urging officials at the University of Rochester to name the university as a sanctuary campus.
More than 160 other colleges and universities are being asked to make such declarations following the election of Donald Trump, who made deportation of illegal aliens a centerpiece of his campaign.
A sanctuary campus would refuse to share the citizenship status of its students or cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It’s intended to protect those who were brought to America illegally as children and grew up here.
U of R Senior Melissa Holloway says a group of students began talking about the petition two weeks ago and put it up on Sunday.
