Ontario County authorities say a Pennsylvania man fired shots from his car Tuesday night during a chase before being fatally shot by Canandaigua police and Ontario County deputies.

Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione said a 911 call from someone who heard “a firecracker or a gunshot” led to a deputy trying to stop a car on Route 5 in Canandaigua. The driver, later identified as 31-year-old Brandon Zurkan of Warren, Pennsylvania, sped away. Deputies saw him driving erratically into the city, firing shots as he did so. He crashed into a fence at Main and Parrish Streets which disabled his car.

Sheriff Cirencione said officers and deputies tried for eight minutes to talk Zurkan down…but he raised his weapon at them, and they opened fire. Zurkan was pronounced dead at the hospital. No officers were injured.

A search of Zurkan’s car turned up another pistol, a full magazine and some pills.
