Orleans County investigators are warning people about a reported mail scam that takes advantage of the Publisher’s Clearing House name.
The Orleans County Major Felony Crime task Force says a county resident got a letter saying they’d won a Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes and including a check for nearly $8,000.
The recipient was suspicious and contacted the issuing bank named on the check. They found it was a fake, and this was part of a scam that’s turned up around the country. Publisher’s Clearing House also said it makes all prize awards in person, never by mail.
The Orleans County District Attorney’s Office is asking anyone who gets one of these letters to call police.
