An attorney for Ontario County Sheriff Kevin Henderson announced Wednesday evening that Henderson had tendered his resignation, effective immediately.
Attorney Eugene Welch issued a statement saying “representatives of the Ontario County Sheriff…and Ontario County recently met and determined that it is in the best interest of the Sheriff, his family, and the employees of Ontario County that the sheriff resign his office effective immediately.”
Neither the Sheriff nor Ontario County officials had anything more to say.
This came on the day subpoenas were issued for records from the sheriff’s office, following a vote last week by a committee of the Ontario County Board of Supervisors. The committee is investigating allegations including that Henderson allowed sexually abusive comments to be made about staff in his presence, and that he made such comments himself.
The union representing sheriff’s deputies, the Ontario County Police Benevolent Association, said in a statement that it is pleased by Henderson’s decision to resign.
