State police say the driver of a car is dead and a passenger died later at the hospital after their car slammed into a tractor-trailer on the State Thruway in Wheatland early Friday morning.

Troopers said later the crash happened when the westbound car came up behind the tractor trailer as its driver tried to make an illegal U-turn through a turn-around in the median. The truck was attempting the turn from the right median across the highway to the left, the driver apparently counting on there being little traffic at 4:30 in the morning in attempting the move.

Troopers say the collision sheared off the roof of the car, which got stuck beneath the truck trailer. The driver left the scene and went to the Double Tree Inn in Henrietta, where he or she managed to dislodge the car roof and left it behind. But troopers say the truck must have significant damage which should be easy to spot. They asked for any witnesses to the Double Tree incident or the accident itself to get in touch with them.

Several drivers came on the accident after it happened and called 911, but so far State Police say nobody seems to have witnessed the actual crash.
