The highly-transmissible Omicron variant of COVID has been detected in Monroe County, by the UR Medicine Laboratory. It’s the first confirmed case locally of what is now accounting for more than 70 percent of all current COVID cases nationwide.
County Executive Adam Bello says it was only a matter of time before Omicron was found locally. County health officials plan a news conference for Thursday and say they’ll release more information at that time.
They repeat that people should get vaccinated and wear masks indoors.
