A man who was being taken to jail from Rochester General Hospital lunged for an officer’s gun on Thursday afternoon, triggering a struggle that led to him being subdued with the help of hospital security.

Police say 38-year-old Jerell Nealy was under arrest after a weapons and drug investigation on Maple street, when he was brought to the hospital complaining of pain. He was treated and was being discharged when he lunged for the gun as officers were adjusting his handcuffs.

Nealy fought with both officers and with hospital security guards who jumped in. Together, they subdued him. Nobody was hurt and the gun never left the officer’s holster.

Nealy was taken to jail and is facing additional charges for attempted robbery, attempted criminal possession of a weapon, attempted grand larceny and resisting arrest.
