Rochester Police say two of their officers were involved in a shooting late last night in the 300 block of Wilkins Street, when they tried to arrest a man who was wanted for possession of an illegal gun.
The department says officers were patrolling in the area when they encountered a group of people on the street. One of the officers recognized a man he had dealt with before and who had a warrant. He tried to take that suspect into custody and a fight started.
Deputy Chief La’Ron Singletary says as the officer and the suspect wrestled, the suspect dropped a gun. Another man grabbed that gun and was then shot by the officer.
The injured man was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The man the officers were trying to arrest got away. The illegal gun was recovered at the scene. The officer wasn’t injured.
Police say they’ll release the identities of the officers involved at a later time. For now, the investigation continues.
