Rochester Police Officer Denny Wright has filed court papers asking permission to possibly sue Rochester and Monroe County after he was blinded by an attack while on the job last year.

Wright was left blind when he was repeatedly stabbed in the face by a suspect in October of 2019. He’s seeking the court’s permission to file a late notice of claim, which is a precursor to filing a lawsuit against the city and county. Wright says he remains under medical care and has not recovered from his injuries. He wants to seek compensation for his losses, pain and suffering.

Wright spent 21 days in the hospital after he was attacked by suspect Keith Williams. Williams is awaiting trial for the attack.

Statement from Justin Roj, Director of Communications & Special Events for the City of Rochester, regarding Notice of Claim filed by Officer Denny Wright:

“We remain grateful to Officer Denny Wright for his service and sacrifice to protect the citizens of Rochester. We continue to offer our prayers for him and his family as he continues to recover. The City Law Department will address the Notice of Claim in the appropriate manner, as it does all pending litigation.”
