The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has charged a Brockport man with a string of crimes in connection with a Monday night domestic incident in Hamlin.

They charged 31-year-old Matthew Denning with aggravated criminal contempt, burglary, menacing and assault. Denning was arrested after being released from Strong Hospital for treatment of minor head injuries he received in the Monday night incident.

Hamlin Justice Paul Rath issued an order of protection for Denning to stay away from Jail Deputy James Atkins, who has been assigned to administrative duty while the investigations of the Monday night incident are underway.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says a domestic incident Monday night in Hamlin led an off-duty deputy to fire his personal weapon after a suspect broke into his estranged wife’s home.

The deputy fired his handgun after getting into a struggle with the man at a house on Redman Road.

Sheriff Todd Baxter says deputies were called to the house about 6:45 p.m. when the man forced his way into the home and injured his estranged wife, who was at that location. The off-duty deputy confronted the man and got into a struggle with him, after which he fired the shot.

The man apparently wasn’t hit, but received other injuries and fled the scene, driving away. He was treated at Strong Memorial Hospital. Both he and the injured woman will be OK.

Sheriff Baxter says there were several other people including children , and the woman had an order of protection against her husband. An internal affairs investigation is underway. The sheriff is holding a late Tuesday morning news conference.
