After months of planning and revisions, the New York State Department of Education has approved the Rochester City School District’s plan to fix what ails it.

NYSED has signed off on the district improvement plan, which in turn was a response to the report by Dr. Jamie Aquino, the consultant appointed by the state to develop an action plan for the district’s low academic achievement rates and financial problems. That’s taken on added urgency since the discovery that the district overspent its budget by $30 million. The State Comptroller’s Office is currently auditing the district’s finances.

In a Thursday letter, NYSED says the district needs to revise its financial and parental engagement sections of the plan; otherwise the district can move forward.
