New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and state legislators have introduced new legislation they say will protect New Yorker’s personal information from data breaches.
The SHIELD Act…for Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security…comes in the wake of the Equifax and Yahoo breaches which compromised millions of Americans. Schneiderman says the goal is to close gaps in New York’s data security laws without slamming businesses with an undue burden.
The AG says companies that collect personal data on New Yorkers should be required to use “reasonable” safeguards for sensitive data and be required to report any breaches when they occur. Companies would also be given incentives to adopt tougher security standards voluntarily.
