They may be jumping the gun, but the National Organization for Women Rochester Chapter has scheduled a Wednesday afternoon Hillary Clinton victory rally outside Rochester City Hall, anticipating the election of the first woman as President of the United States.
NOW says it’s also in honor of Rochester’s Susan B. Anthony, and the 144th anniversary of her then-illegal vote in the 1872 presidential election.
It’s worth mentioning that 1872 was also the year of a split between conservative and moderate wings in the Republican Party, with the moderates nominating President Ulysses S. Grant for a second term and the conservatives running Horace Greeley. There was also an electoral crisis when Horace Greeley died after election day…but before the Electoral College had a chance to meet and actually elect the winning Republican ticket. Congress finally disallowed Greeley’s electoral votes.
