The doors are closing all across the Rochester area.
In a few hours this past weekend, the known cases of cornavirus in Monroe County went from two to ten. There’s also a positive case now in Ontario County.
All Monroe County, Ontario, Genesee, Orleans and Wayne County schools are closing either today or later this week. Local school districts and the City of Rochester have made preparations to feed children who depend on the schools for breakfast and lunch. Individual suburban districts are to have guidance for parents; Rochester is keeping seven school buildings and nine city R-Centers open, where Foodlink will supply up to 20,000 meals per day. Information is on the school district and city websites.
Investigators are tracing all the contacts of the infected people that they can find. High risk individuals will be contacted by their county health departments.
Four adults who tested positive have a connection with Greece Arcadia Middle School, where a worker tested positive on Friday night. An employee of Greece Athena also tested positive.
One of the infected person has a child enrolled at the Unique Child Day Care Center in Rochester. Health officials have ordered that center closed for 48 hours for disinfection. County Health Commissioner Dr. Mike Mendoza has asked day care centers to consider if they need to be open. He’s also recommended that all bars and restaurants consider shutting their doors for the time being to prevent spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Another positive case involved the Friendly Home of Rochester. An employee who lives in Ontario County tested positive, but according to officials there does not work directly with residents.
One Rochester firefighter who responded to an EMS call for one of the newly confirmed cases was potentially exposed. He’s been quarantined and currently showing no symptoms.
City and County officials have announced additional food and child care resources for lower income residents while schools are forced to remain closed
