NORFOLK, VA. — The Rochester Red Wings built a 2-0 lead on Norfolk but could not hold it as the Tides rallied for single runs in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings to pull out a 3-2 victory Friday night at Harbor Park.
DH Matt Adams opened the scoring with a two-run shot in the second, his team-leading fifth home run of the year to give the Wings a 2-0 lead. Pitching dominated, keeping the score the same until the sixth, when Norfolk got on the board on an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 2-1.
Norfolk evened the score at two in the seventh on an RBI triple but stranded the runner at third, keeping the score at 2-2 heading into the eighth. After the Wings went scoreless in the top half, Norfolk pushed ahead on a solo homer, giving the Tides a 3-2 lead with an inning to play. Rochester reached scoring position in the ninth after pinch runner Cody Wilson stole second base, but were unable to push across the tying run, and dropped their second straight.
RHP Wily Peralta made the start and delivered one of the Wings best outings of the year. He faced the minimum through five innings pitched, allowing just one hit while striking out five and walking none in just 50 pitches. He was relieved by RHP Andres Machado, LHP Jose Ferrer, RHP Gerson Moreno, and LHP Alberto Baldonado, who combined to cover the final three frames for Rochester. Moreno was tagged with the loss, and RHP Logan Gillaspie earned the win for Norfolk.
The Wings look to bounce back Saturday, with RHP Cory Abbott making the start for the Wings against Norfolk southpaw Drew Rom. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm.
The Diamond Pro Player of the Game is Wings starting pitcher Wily Peralta, who took a perfect game into the fifth inning and allowed just one hit and no runs, with five strikeouts and no walks through five innings pitched.
