The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says hunters in a place they shouldn’t have been probably triggered a scare Thursday at the Rochester Christian School in Penfield.

The school was locked down and authorities called in after a parent heard gunshots while dropping a child off at school mid-morning. The School on Embury Road became the center of an investigation involving deputies, state police and two other departments.

Deputy Chief Michael Fowler says their investigation showed one or two hunters had shot firearms in the woods near the school. It’s an area that’s open for bow hunters in season, but use of firearms is prohibited by town law. The shots were fired about 1,500 feet from the school.
