New York and four other states are suing the Environmental Protection Agency, demanding they do something about pollution that blows in from other states upwind.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says those states are mostly west and south of the northeastern states. New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont say air pollution, much of it from big coal-burning power plants with tall stacks, blows into the northeast and adds to its smog and soot problems. They say it’s a big reason why they’re not meeting federal air quality standards.
They want the EPA to force states including Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia to treat their emissions at the source.
