A report from New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says New Yorkers are sending nearly $41 billion more in tax payments to the federal government than the state got back in federal spending last year.
Putting it another way, DiNapoli’s staff says New Yorkers paid more than $12,900 per capita to the federal government and got back about $2,000 less in services from Washington. That’s 84 cents back for every dollar New York State paid to Washington.
New York’s “Trade Deficit” with the federal government is the biggest of the 50 states when you measure by total dollars. We’re one of 13 states that gets back less than they pay in.
