New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says his office has sent cease and desist letters to seven companies that have been claiming their products can help prevent infection by the Zika virus.
Schneiderman says the products are ineffective against mosquitos, and in the case of an ultrasonic gadget that’s supposed to repel mosquitos, it may actually attract them.
The attorney general says these companies are trying to cash in on the Zika scare.
He says the only thing that effectively protects against mosquito bites is an insect repellent containing DEET. Other effective compounds are lemon eucalyptus oil, picaridin and a repellent called IR3535. He says anything else is a waste of money and leaves you at risk of being bitten.
