The University of Rochester has named Sarah C. Mangelsdorf as its new president, the permanent replacement for Joel Seligman.

Mangelsdorf is currently provost at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and also a professor of psychology internationally known for research on social and emotional development of young children. She’ll be the first woman to head the university when she formally takes office in the summer of 2019.

She will take over from Richard Feldman, who has been serving as interim president at the U of R.

University of Rochester Board Chair Richard Handler said Mangelsdorf is a leader who stood out from more than 200 people contacted in developing a pool of possible candidates. She says Mangelsdorf was the unanimous choice of every group on the search committee and the entire Board of Trustees.

Mangelsdorf currently serves as the chief operating officer at Wisconsin, where her responsibilities include oversight of all academic programs and budget planning for 12 schools and colleges.

In a statement she said: “I’m immensely excited to be joining the University of Rochester, and I am looking forward to working with our outstanding faculty, students, staff, and alumni, and with the members of the greater Rochester community.”
