The first train crossed the new Letchworth Gorge Bridge in Letchworth State Park yesterday, and the old steel trestle which was in service for well over 100 years has been shut down.
Norfolk Southern Railroad says the old bridge will now be demolished. The new steel arch bridge began construction just over two years ago to span the Genesee River between Wyoming and Livingston Counties. It cost more than $71 million.
Trains had to slow to a crawl to cross the 1870s-vintage trestle. Now they can maintain speed and deliver their cargos sooner.
