Information released over the weekend by the New York State Health Department under a freedom of information request from the Empire Center shows more than 13,000 New York nursing home residents have died of COVID-19 during the pandemic. The total is 13,163 deaths with 4,067 taking place in hospitals or other facilities outside their nursing home residence. That’s 31 percent dying outside the nursing home.
The Cuomo Administration previously omitted hospital deaths from its reporting on nursing home deaths, while other states do not.
