A new statue of abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass was dedicated in Rochester this afternoon…on the spot where its predecessor was torn off its base by vandals last weekend.

The statue was one of 13 by artist Olivia Kim put up by the “Re-energizing the Legacy of Frederick Douglass Project.” The statues around Rochester commemorate the 200th anviersary of  Douglass’ birth. Kim said she’s been impressed by the outpouring of love and support since the vandalism.

The two St. John Fisher College students who tore the statue down and tried to carry it off have been charged with criminal mischief. St. John Fisher President Gerard Rooney said his college is committed to re-earning the respect of the Rochester Community and to honoring Frederick Douglass.
