The Rochester City School Board voted Thursday night to remove the name of Nathaniel Rochester from City School No. 3, and replace it with the name of Dr. Alice Holloway Young.
Rochester, who gave his name to the city, was a slave holder. Board members took that into account in voting to rename the middle school for the city’s first black school principal, and head of the city’s first school desegregation campaign.
At 97, Dr. Young is still active in the community. The school on Adams Street will open under her name in the fall.
