The New York State Department of Agriculture is investigating after some New Yorkers received unsolicited packages of seeds in the mail.

The Ag Department says the packages appear to have come from China and are marked as containing jewelry, but actually contained plant seeds of an unknown type. People who receive such a package should not handle or plant the seeds. They should be stored away from children and pets, and the state advises anyone who gets them to email the USDA immediately at erich.l.glasgow@usda.gov .

The state says the USDA is investigating this issue.
