A Quinnipiac Poll finds well over half of New Yorkers support the idea of changing the state constitution, with 55-to-30 percent supporting a state Constitutional Convention.
Assistant Poll Director Maurice Carroll says support holds true for every party, gender, age and racial group.
The number one thing New Yorkers want: to take the power of redrawing election districts away from the State Legislature. By 64-to-24 percent, New Yorkers say an independent non-partisan commission should draw Congressional, Assembly and State Senate districts rather than New York lawmakers.
Quinnipiac finds New Yorkers opposed to public financing for candidates by 54-to-34 percent. Forty-nine to 41 percent support an amendment to block public employee pension rollbacks and and overwhelming 68 percent support an amendment to guarantee a woman’s right to abortion.
Under New York law, voters decide every 20 years if they want a convention. It will be on the ballot again in November.
