Officials at SUNY Geneseo said this weekend they now have 12 confirmed cases of mumps among college students, eight among students living on campus,. And four living off campus.
There’s also one suspected case waiting on lab results to come back to make sure.
The college is telling students who haven’t had the MMR vaccine to stay away from campus until January 5th. That may be extended, because they want non-immunized people to stay away for 26 days following the most recently confirmed case.
Having had the vaccine in the past may not mean immunity today, as all the confirmed cases had their shots. Immunity declines over time and there are also strains the vaccine may miss.
