State Police are investigating the death of a Monroe County sex offender just a couple of months before he was due to be released from prison.

They say 51-year-old Daniel Wingate died at the Auburn State Prison after serving five years on a sexual abuse conviction. He was to be released in September. A State Police Spokesman says they’re investigating but can’t comment on details. He says nobody has been charged with anything.

Wingate died at a Central New York hospital according to the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. The Cayuga County coroner will rule on his cause of death.

Wingate was found guilty in 1994 of sexually abusing a seven-year-old girl in Monroe
