Monroe County has recorded its first human case of West Nile Virus for the year.
County Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza says we’re entering a period where the risk will increase and continue until the first heavy frost of the fall.
Monroe County’s is the second West Nile case reported in the state this year. Mendoza says late summer and early fall are the worst times for the mosquito-borne disease. He says people should take precautions including wearing long sleeves and using an insect repellent that contains DEET.
You should also avoid going out at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active and drain any standing water on your property.
