Monroe County’s Department of Public Health is investigating the county’s first case of monkeypox. The agency says the risk to the general public remains low.
The county says men who have sex with men, plus older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk from the virus.
People are advised to avoid skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash or other monkeypox-related symptoms. The virus spreads through direct contact with monkeypox sores or rashes, contact with towels, clothing or bedding used by an infected person, or respiratory droplets or oral fluids from someone with the disease.
Symptoms include rashes, bumps or blisters on the skin, along with fever and headaches.
