One week after losing the Monroe County Executive’s seat to Democrat Adam Bello, The Republican majority on the Monroe County Legislature moved Tuesday night to restrict the office’s powers.
The current county charter gives legislators the right to appoint a few department heads, but most are named directly by the county exec. The CABLE Act (for Checks and Balances for Legislative Equality) would give the legislature approval over each department head. It would also extend the legislature’s approval to deputy county executives, the county attorney and other posts currently named by the county executive.
Republicans have held both branches of county government for nearly 30 years, but in January will have a Democratic county executive and only a one-seat majority in the county legislature.
The measure was introduced during Tuesday night’s meeting as a “matter of necessity.”
