Monroe County will reduce its gasoline tax beginning this summer to help bring the cost down for drivers.
Monroe County Executive Adam Bello made that announcement Monday morning while guest hosting the “Bob Lonsberry Show” on Newsradio WHAM1180. He later confirmed it in a press conference, saying people shouldn’t have to choose between food and gasoline. The county plan will coincide with the state’s plan to cut its gasoline tax from June through December.
The AAA says gas is going for about $4.25 a gallon currently in the Rochester area. The county move would save drivers eight cents per gallon on top of the state’s tax cut.
The inflated price of gas has boosted the county’s coffers this year, making it possible for the county to cut the tax.
