A Monroe County District Attorney’s investigation is underway, after Greece Police Chief Drew Forsythe crashed his department-issued SUV while avoiding a deer on Route 390.
The crash happened near Latona Road about 1:30 Thursday morning according to Greece Police. Forsythe was returning from a New York State Police function when he swerved to avoid the deer and hit the guardrail, heavily damaging the SUV and banging his head. He did not require medical treatment.
The GPD says the chief’s radio quit working, and the crash flipped his cellphone out of its place so he couldn’t find it. He limped the damaged vehicle off the expressway and made it to North Greece and English Roads, where the department says his radio started working again and he called the accident in. They say he was trying to reach police headquarters off Long Pond Road next to Town Hall.Â
The responding officer did not administer a breathalyzer test because he had no reason to suspect the chief might be intoxicated, again according to the GPD. An officer drove him home.
Chief Forsythe then called the deputy town supervisor, and the next day reportedly told Supervisor Bill Reilich directly what had happened.
The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that it has been made aware of the accident, and “at this time, at the request of the Greece Police Department, the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office investigators will begin an investigation into this matter.”
