With news about the rising cost of EpiPen injectors, Monroe Ambulance says it’s switching to traditional syringes and bottled epinephrine for treating patients suffering severe allergic reactions.
The one-time use pens are used for treating anaphylactic shock which can kill an allergy sufferer. The manufacturer, Mylan, has hiked the price by 400 percent since 2007…from $50 to as high as $600 for two shots.
Monroe says it’s ambulance crews have been re-trained to draw epinephrine from a vial and give victims a shot. They stress it’s the same drug that’s in the pens. It’s also much more reasonably priced.
