Divers have recovered the body of the Geneva man who drowned in Seneca Lake on Thursday while trying to help his 11-year-old niece.
Seneca County Sheriff Tim Luce says a State Police boat with side-scanning sonar identified Gary Gladdis Jr’s body underwater on the east side of the lake near Kine Beach…and divers recovered it.
The body was found less than a day after the 47-year-old Gladis and his niece jumped off his boat for a swim. They didn’t put on their life jackets, and ran into trouble when wind and waves pushed the boat away from them.
Gladis’ 12-year-old daughter realized what was happening and called 911. People on another boat pulled the 11-year-old out of the water and she’s OK. Gladis went under trying to help his niece, and was lost.
