Bail for Michael Stagles has been set at $25,000. Stagles is the Rochester father accused of criminally negligent homicide for failing to act as his three-year-old daughter allegedly suffered fatal injuries at his girlfriend’s hands.
Stagles’ attorney pushed for either supervised release or an ankle monitoring bracelet, but the judge declined to set him free.
Stagles’ girlfriend, Erica Bell, is accused of both second degree murder and manslaughter for causing the little girl’s death.
Brook Stagles died nearly a month ago, a day after being brought to Strong Memorial Hospital with injuries so severe that doctors asked if she’d been in a car crash.
Prosecutor Sara Van Strydonck said in court that witnesses will testify she was in distress for several days before her death. She says Stagles confessed to police that he didn’t take her to the hospital sooner because he was afraid of getting in trouble with police and child protective services.
