The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what caused four inmates at the Monroe County Jail to become incoherent and unresponsive Wednesday, with all four ending up in the hospital.
A jail deputy running to respond to the emergency fell and suffered a head injury, and also went to the hospital.
The sheriff’s office says all four inmates were in stable condition and the deputy wasn’t seriously injured but was rendered unconscious.
The jail was placed into lockdown and was swept by police dogs. The MCSO believes a contraband substance entered the jail through the mail, and was ingested by the inmates.
