Monroe County Sheriff’s Investigators are asking for the public’s help in solving a 55-year-old cold case: the double homicide of two teenagers who went out on a date and never returned.

It happened on July 13, 1963. Eighteen-year-old Shari Smoyer of Perinton and 17-year-old Jack King of Geneseo went to see a movie at the Starlite Drive-In on West Henrietta Road in Henrietta. The next morning, a fisherman found their bodies beside a stream along Route 96 just north of Bushnell’s Basin, an area often referred to as “Lover’s Lane.” Both teens had been shot multiple times and Smoyer had suffered severe head trauma. Neither had been robbed or sexually abused.

The couple was last seen alive about 1:00 a.m. on July 14th, driving through Pittsford. Investigators were able to collect bullet casings and determined the weapon used was a Colt .45 caliber pistol.

Hundreds of tips have been received over the years and thousands of people have been interviewed, but no suspect has ever been identified.

Anyone who has information about this case is urged to call 911.
