Monroe Community College says in a statement it has identified the student who posted a racist tweet claiming his confederate flag had been vandalized, and that MCC Vice President Lloyd Holmes has met with him. The college says he may face student discipline, but doesn’t specify if that will be the case.
The statement signed by College President Anne Kress says MCC believes in freedom of speech for all members of the college community, but the student code of conduct provides for discipline if student actions pose a risk of harm or interferes with the college’s mission. Students are referred through a disciplinary process in such cases.
The statement goes on to say MCC will review and look at revising its code as it related to social media.
Students have reacted to the racial epithet in the tweet by demanding the offender’s expulsion. Kress says federal privacy law limits what the school can say about student discipline.
