New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman offered up what he calls a “legal roadmap” for local governments and police agencies in their future dealings with immigrants.
Schneiderman says he’s anticipating the changes to be expected in federal immigration policies and priorities once President-elect Trump is sworn in tomorrow. He’s written a legal foundation for communities that want to offer “sanctuary” to illegals or limit their participation in federal immigration enforcement.
Rochester, Syracuse and New York City have adopted “sanctuary” policies. Albany’s mayor and Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren both stood with Schneiderman today.
Mayor Warren says Rochester’s “City of Sanctuaries” resolution was adopted in 1986. She says she’ll ask City Council to bring the resolution up to date and include Schneiderman’s recommendations. She says nobody should be denied access to a job or a safe neighborhood just because of who they are.
