Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren’s campaign staff says she has effectively won the Democratic Party nomination for a second term after a meeting of a southwest Rochester party committee Wednesday night.
The 27th Legislative District Committee has City Council Member Adam McFadden, a Warren supporter, as one of its leaders. The 27th threw its votes to Mayor Warren, and her campaign staff says that’s enough to guarantee her the Democratic endorsement when the party holds its nominating convention on May 18th.
Warren said in a statement that she has overcome the odds by standing up for the people and doing the right thing.
Two other Democrats are challenging Mayor Warren for the nomination: former City Police Chief Jim Sheppard and former news anchor Rachel Barnhart.
Sheppard issued a statement saying he respects the party process, but it’s also true that no endorsed Democrat has won a citywide primary in nearly 30 years. Barnhard said the designating process is “the ultimate insider game” and she’s proud not to be a member of either the Warren or Sheppard faction of the Democratic Party.
