Rochester Mayor Malik Evans says the state of emergency he declared because of homicides in the North Clinton Avenue area will likely be extended. In a City Hall news conference, the mayor said zip code 14605, the North Clinton Avenue and Lyell Avenue areas remain the scenes of a disproportionate degree of violence.
There have been two new homicides this week: one involving the death of a 16-year-old boy late Monday night, and another involving the death of a 26-year-old man Tuesday night. That victim was found suffering from multiple gunshots on Roycroft Drive and died after reaching the hospital. No arrest has been made yet in either crime.
The state of emergency was declared July 31st and was to run for a month. Evans says he expects to renew the order once that time is up. He says the shootings are not happening randomly and the city’s job is to disrupt the pattern.
The city has ordered two businesses shut down, put restrictions on a third and stepped up police patrols in the high-risk areas since the state of emergency was declared.
