Rochester Mayor Malik Evans says carnage is taking place in our communities, and it’s been going on since he was 17 and a person was murdered outside his home over a “petty beef.”

The mayor says many in our community are now telling that same story over and over again. So far this year, 41 people have been murdered in Rochester. He says that means thousands of other people’s lives have been affected. And Evans says there have been more than 200 people who have been shot and not killed. All of those people come from neighborhoods where people now fear for their safety. That’s despite more than 430 guns being taken off the street…more than one a day over a year. Fourteen of those guns were seized in the last nine days.

There have been 22 homicide arrests so far, leaving 19 people still to be tracked down.

Mayor Evans says the city will continue collaborations with U.S. Marshals, County Sheriff’s Office and State Police. He also declared a Gun Violence Emergency in the City of Rochester. He says the City will use every tool it has against this violence, from prevention to law enforcement. He says we can’t have sections of Rochester were people believe they can do whatever they want.
